About Me - September 22, 2012

It’s all a juggling act!  Life that is… Now that school is back in session, I find it hard to balance the fun with the work.  My fun is crafting and it is therapeutic as well.  When time does not allow for the fun, life can seem pretty strained and exhausting.  Even just a visit to my craft room can ease the pains of the day.  This week’s pain, my dad has been admitted into the hospital for a virus.  He has acute myeloid leukemia (diagnosed in February).

Life cannot be taken advantage of… Are you living each day to its fullest?  Are your eyes set on the things above and are you actively working towards the legacy you will be leaving behind?  What will people know about you and your life?  Have you sat down and shared who you are?  Have you consistently taken time out of your busy schedule and worked on your memory album?  Your memories are what will be left behind for generations to come and if you do not write them down, they will be forgotten over time.

This past week I have shared from our family vacation to Florida/Georgia and this week I will be sharing from our family album.  Do not be intimidated by the fancy layouts you come across in your crafting research, just focus on the end result… Getting to those memories and putting them into a book for the future generations to enjoy.

Next month Close To My Heart will be featuring Studio J in their newsletter.  Studio J is our online digital scrapbooking program (currently available, see blog sidebar badge).  If you feel that you are overwhelmed when it comes to which embellishments to place here or there on a scrapbook page, try digital scrapbooking.  No mess, no supply storage necessary… Only you, your digital photos and your computer with Studio J membership accessibility are required.  Check it out on my website

Upcoming October workshops:

We will be creating a fall themed scrapbook layout and card.  Cost $10, free with purchase of $50 (plus S&H) in products.  See my website to JOIN in on a fun evening of crafting!
October 1, 6pm-8pm

October 16, 6pm-8pm

Have a great first week of fall.

Portrait Album Series

I am proud to say that out of all the years my boys were in school, I only missed one first day of school photo.  Why, we are not sure.  It could have been lost in the digital highway to nowhere, or mom just completely forgot as it was the year I began teaching full time at their school.  I can't imagine I would have been a little distracted.  Sorry boys!

Now that the pictures are taken and the boys are in college, what to do with the portraits and memories of their growing up.  How about a personal album for each boy to be a gift to them on their wedding day?!  Great idea...  Here are some of the layouts I have created.

Florida/Georgia Vacation Series

My husband took part in an extensive workers' compensation underwriter training program over several years.  The reward at the end, besides all of the acronyms after his name on his business cards... a trip to the east coast!  Since we were traveling that far (we live on the west coast) we decided to take two full weeks and see some sights.  The actual ceremony was to be in Atlanta, Georgia.  We began our adventure in Orlando, Florida.  I will be sharing some of the layouts from our trip.

Disney World

While at Disney World, we celebrated my birthday.  This is a photo of shaving cream used to write on the hotel bathroom mirror.  My gifts, none other than Minnie Mouse coffee mug and t-shirt!

About Me – September 15, 2012

Happy Birthday Autumn!  No, not the season.  It is my cat’s birthday today; she is 14 years old.  Isn’t it amazing how our pets become a member of the family and almost human in their actions? We have a morning ritual, I let her in from her night out prowling and we both stretch our aching hips, she runs to the sliding glass door to intimidate the dog (Stuart) while I fetch his food, and then we begin our morning routine of getting me ready and off to work.  Every evening when I arrive back at home, she is waiting on the front porch with much to say about her day’s events, as do I.  She is a wonderful companion.

Throughout my life I have had many animals come along who have touched my life in such wonderful ways.  Each one has been scrapbooked to forever be in my memories.  All of the pets we have had since my boys were little are fully documented from the walking stick bugs, multiple snakes from the yard, geckos, cats, fish and dog.  Have you created a special album for your beloved pets?

This week I challenge you to find the photos you have taken of Fido or Fluffy and create a layout honoring them as a special member of your family.

Enjoy your week!

Can you guess why she is named Autumn?

About Me - September 8, 2012

Week one of school is over...  How did you fare?  Was it your very first week of experiencing a first born attend kindergarten?  Was it your first week with your oldest being a senior in high school?  It was my first week of school having no more of my own children attending the k-12 school where I teach!  I now have two children in college.

I look at my classroom filled with excited students and think about the classes of students that are ahead of them in life.  I cannot help but ask myself, did I do my best for those students?  This yearly question gives me the personal challenge to step it up more each year.  As each year passes it can be easy to fall into a dull humdrum of teaching from what is basically a script.  As a type A person and easily bored, I need to change things up for myself as much as for my students.

The Internet is wonderful for helping find things to challenge myself in planning out my lessons.  I have become so addicted to blogging; there are so many possibilities out there! I actually find myself overwhelmed with how much information I can pull from to step up my classroom teaching.  Blogging alone has been quite a teaching tool for me.  I have learned so much from researching how to keep my own up and going and refreshed for you viewers.  No one likes dull humdrum!

Since I need to be devoting more of my time to classroom teaching, I may not be able to post on my blog everyday.  My goal is to keep you updated on the happenings with Close To My Heart as your Independent Consultant and continue to enter blog challenges to keep my ideas and creativity fresh.  Both of these focuses will give me avenues to do my best for you as blog viewers and customers.

Let me challenge you to take time to create, it is easy to fall back into the busyness of the school year and not take time for you.  Make a point to research a craft idea a week and then set aside a day to actually create what you found.  Enter challenges to force yourself to get outside of your comfort zone.  How are you doing on scrapbooking your memories?

Enjoy your week!

Scrapalicious USA Welcoming Fall Challenge

Scrapalicious USA has asked for us to bring in the new fall season by creating something that reminds us of the season, such as, crunchy leaves, crisp new apples, back to school, teachers...  This gave me the inspiration I needed this evening.  My middle school home economics will be covered by a substitute tomorrow as I will be on our high school retreat.  I always like the students to create cards to send to their grandparents for Grandparents Day.  Here is what I came up with for them to make tomorrow.  Thanks for the motivation Scrapalicious USA to get this done tonight!

Challenges this card is entered in:
Crafting for all Seasons Challenge - School Days for a Child

Here is my version of this week's Basic Grey layout.  I rotated the layout once.

Mojo Monday #257

Once again dug through my collection of embellishments to meet the challenge put up by Mojo Monday #257.

Eureka Stamps Challenge #4 - Go Team Go!

Here is my entry for Eureka Stamps Challenge #4 - Go Team Go!  Die Cut is Disney, tennis shoes are a roller stamp I had laying around.  Love the fact that challenges are making me dig through my supplies to find all the elements needed to create their designs.  So get in your craft room and shuffle through the piles and cobwebs.  You will be united with the "toys" you had great plans for long ago.

My card also works within the Retro Sketches challenge #27 and I used ribbon which Make It Monday was looking for due to their sponsor Pretty Little Ribbon Shop.

Other Challenges I entered this card in:
Retro Sketches - #27

Make It Monday #105 - The Pretty Little Ribbon Shop (sponsor)

With Pretty Little Ribbon Shop as the sponsor for the Make It Monday #105 challenge, we were asked to incorporate ribbon into our creation.  You will see that I used ribbon as a "bookmark" on my cards.  Here are four versions of this specially folded card shared by Janet Lemke-Hayes (website for original idea Valita's Designs & Fresh Folds).
We are called to be inspired each and every day by God's word.
