New Year's Gift Bag

Happy New Year!

Almost anyway... Need a gift idea for a hostess or to mail out to family and friends? Pick up some Micro Seal pouch material, a box of New Year's Eve hats, horns and leas, candy and some shredded paper and you have the makings for a great gift bag. Stamp up a card and let me show you how...

Let me show you how to make a gift bag using an everyday household item, a seal-a-meal. I found mine at Goodwill for $5.99!

I have made a video showing you how I put the gift bag together. The lighting is better, my boys gave me an industrial halogen light for Christmas to help with the lighting in my craft room. Hope you can see better than before. Thanks boys!

Making Friends With My Silhouette

There really is no jumping in with both feet and just trying out a machine for me. I have to research, approach with caution, and try a couple things out. I think I may have jumped in a bit too soon. In the process I sat on my own foot. How does one sit on their own foot?! The answer, a tipped folding chair... Boy does it hurt. I was a bit nauseated afterwards, but kept on trucking along. I did not take a look at my foot until I was heading off to bed, took of my sock and oh my! It is quite bruised and sore.

The incident occurred while attempting to try out a two-page layout I ordered from the Silhouette online store.  I have not found any video tutorial for the "how-to" for a two-page download. Be aware that all of the elements are thrown onto the screen within Silhouette Studio in one big group. I began by ungrouping all of the elements and then began to fill color each piece for my own organization. Once all of the pieces were colored, I then began placing like colors on the "mat" to prepare for cutting. I was able to get all of the pieces on to four total cuts, less the photo mats which I can just cut to my own needs later.

My next dilemma was placing the cardstock onto the mat. All things were not squared off and I had to cut some papers at a diagonal. This too proved to be a challenge, but really the pieces turned out okay. I only need to cover up a few errors in my calculations for placement on the mat. Remember, there is always some way to cover up a mistake in paper crafting.

Now I am to gluing all the pieces together, I have dry placed them all and am quite pleased. My next challenge will be to figure out how to reduce the images all together to keep them all proportional. I have not found a truly good video demonstrating how to reduce the two-page layouts you purchase. As a reminder, all the pieces are all together on the mat once opened.

Here are the pieces all ready to be glued. Stay tuned... More research to come.

Silhouette Cameo!

Playing with my new Christmas present from my husband, the Silhouette Cameo. I had been researching and watching many YouTube videos before putting the Cameo on my wish list. From what I have seen, the Cricut and Silhouette play together NICELY! I have installed the software, shopped the Silhouette On Line Store and now am playing... Here are my first cuts, a basketball and a branch with bee hive and bees. SO CUTE!

How was your Christmas? I really had a great time both Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with my family. We laughed so hard for two days my jaw bones ached.

Team Spirit - Cricut Cartridge (Basketball)

Let's Play Some Hoops!

At the school where I teach we have an adopt-a-warrior program in which teachers and classes adopt the sports team players. It is now basketball season and I love my new Cricut cartridge - Team Spirit! It has most any sport and mascots you can think of or need. Our mascot is the warrior. I have cut the warrior head and flipped it to create "bookends" for a layout.

Frosted Workshop On The Go - January 14 Scrapbook Club

January Scrapbook Club

Join me on January 14, 6:00-9:00 pm for the Frosted Workshop On The Go (WOTG) Scrapbook Club. If you have not already ordered your WOTG kit, hurry. It is currently on the retiring items list and will only be available while supplies last.

The advantage of being a part of the scrapbook club is the opportunity to be the "hostess" of a club night once or twice a year (based on a 10 month commitment, no July or December). Once a minimum of 5 participants have joined, a rotation schedule will be made based on the order of which participants joined the club to earn the hostess rewards for the month. We currently have 2 truly committed participants.

Each month we will focus on a Close To My Heart Workshop On The Go kit ($29.95 + $4.95 shipping, includes all the material to create two 2-page layouts). I will also show you ideas for a third 2-page layout and a card using the remaining products from the same WOTG kit. Since the materials have to be ordered ahead of time, it is important to pre-register and pay by the dates I have listed for each club date.

If you are unable to attend a club night, you are asked to still purchase the kit each month to remain a participant and not lose your place in line to be hostess.

Not in the area, you can still be a part from afar. I will share the additional layout and card instructions with you. I may even use this as an excuse to make a monthly YouTube video for my channel.

Happy Thanksgiving

May you and yours have a blessed day full of reasons to be thankful. I am thankful for my family, my friends, my job, my home, food on our plates, craft room, vehicles, insurance, medicine... on and on. I have been blessed by wonderful blog followers and great people to paper craft along side me. Thank you all.

We get so busy in our day that we forget to stop and think about what all we are blessed with down to the smallest crumb or last penny. I pray you will take a breath and realize what you have in your life to be thankful for and give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.

I love you dad, you will be missed on this first Thanksgiving without you by our sides. May you be celebrating along with the Lord, and all our loved ones who are with you.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving celebrations!

Scrapbook Club comment on... Ask a Crafter #14 Kelly and Lindsay

Scrapbook Club

I am an avid watcher of The Frugal Crafter, Lindsay. She is wonderful at showing us how to use crafting tools and techniques. She is also who I go to for art how-to. She speaks at a level to which we can all feel confident about going and doing something on our own for the very first time. Lindsay is also very open to questions and has put together a weekly YouTube video in which she answers followers questions.

How does this relate to me posting on my blog... She mentioned my post from her Ask a Crafter #13. A follower wanted to know about stamp/scrap clubs. Lindsay opened the comments up to posting any we knew about, well, I just so happen to have one every month. So, in this week's video she mentioned my post much to my surprise. It literally took my breath away to hear The Frugal Crafter, Lindsay, say my name in her video. That is how much I look to her for advice and admire her expertise.

Please view her video, visit her channel and see all that she is willing to share. This post is about her, so if you have questions and want more information about my scrapbook club check out the side bar, e-mail me or leave a comment below.

Thank you Lindsay!

WOYWW #232, Thanksgiving Crafting

With Halloween over and Christmas on its way, Thanksgiving gets very little recognition until the day off and we all get to eat quite glutinously, watch some football and sleep.

I am doing my part to remember this holiday of celebration by pulling out all of my Thanksgiving themed stamps sets, Cricut cartridges containing pilgrims and turkeys, and embellishments. My plan, to create more themed pages and use my STUFF.

So take a look at this week's version of my desk...

The breakfast of champions, Quaker Real Medleys oatmeal and milk. Holiday catalogs full of sales and shopping enticements. But the best part, look at all the Cricut handbooks and cartridges that contain some form of Thanksgiving image! I was glad to see that I actually have more images than originally thought. I do not have a Thanksgiving specific cartridge :-( I have a variety of acrylic and wood stamp sets to choose from also. Now, let's talk about the pizza box to the far right... that contains my stickers. If you know me, you know I LOVE stickers and collect them just for the sake of having them to touch and shuffle through on occasion.

So here's to hoping I get some work done with these fun "toys" I have dug out from my stash. Have a look around the world at what is on other artsy, craftsy people's desks at WOYWW 232 from Stamping Ground's own Julia Dunnit

Thank you to all who have visited and shared a comment of two with me. I will be around this evening. Please check out my post on the flour babies of 2013. They are so cute. My students are doing their project very well.

Enjoy!

Flour Babies 2013

Freshman Career - Life Skills

As the college/career teacher, I feel it is very important that our students be taught life skills; cooking, sewing, cleaning, etc. We, as a school, are not able to afford the fancy electronic babies to teach our students the importance of taking care of a baby and the additional work it is to care for one. Our version, creating 5-pound flour babies that any parent would love.

To make this project two-fold, the students learn to sew on a sewing machine the felt arms, legs and head. These are then hot glued to a duct tape covered bag of flour (this helps prevent the explosion of the flour on the school campus). For the face, wiggle eyes and a pacifier with the nipple cut off. Hot glued of course.

Another technique they are taught is how to wrap yarn around a dowel, dampen the yarn and bake to make curls. Did you know this?!

The assignment: carry the flour babies for 7 days, journal te experience by sharing the expressions/reactions of people they meet, contact me every two hours throughout the night by text, e-mail or call (my phone is on silent :-) If a baby is not brought to school a paper will be written on child abandonment. If the baby is in any way damaged, a paper is to be written on child abuse. If any of the check-in points are missed throughout the night, paragraphs are to be written on childhood illnesses. The best part, enjoy the experience with classmates by having all-nighters, going to the movies, etc.

The 2013 class has 16 students and their first outing is to our area science museum. Surprisingly they are looking forward to carrying the flour babies around with them.

Great project! Check out their work below. Stay tuned for a family portrait...

Pattern Pieces for arms, legs and head
