WOYWW - Cricut Create A Friend, Nerds Rule and Bookworm

Fellow desk snoopers, I have been working through my Cricut Create A Friend cartridge to dress my little people from last week one key at a time. This post is for keys #3 nerds rule and #4 bookworm.  How appropriate for a teacher :-) Here is a look at the mess I make while cutting out the various pieces on my Cricut machine.  I posted a video on Sunday about my short cuts I take to create these fun friends, check it out here.

The video explains how I have cut my cardstock ahead of time in measurements of 4"x4", 4"x6" and so on. When I am ready to Cricut, all I have to do is pick my colors and lay them out on the mat in the order I will be cutting the images.

If you are wondering who the desk snoopers are, take a look at Julia Dunnit's blog Stamping Ground for how to participate and to check out other people's desks from around the world. Thanks to those who stopped by last week. I have enjoyed seeing your work desks.

Cricut Create A Friend - Count Dracula and The Witch

Count Dracula and The Witch

I played with two new keys from the Cricut Create A Friend - #45 Count Dracula and #46 The Witch

Here is a video I created while making them. It is a video on how to use the universal overlay from Cricut to create the Count Dracula and Witch from the new Create A Friend cartridge, as well as, how to conserve cardstock, and how to store cardstock scraps.

Some questions have been coming up with regards to the cost effectiveness of the size reduction in packaging and the use of a universal overly. Are we, the consumers, truly benefiting cost wise from the change? I am not seeing it yet as the price of my most recent cartridge, Create A Friend, was at or close to what I had been paying before.  However, if you do not shop around and find it cheaper as I did, they are quite costly.

What is the cost of the Universal Overlay?  Cricut.com $2.99 +S&H  Cricutmachine.com $2.99 +S&H
I have not searched at a retail establishment in my town for one yet. Therefore, I am not sure of their availability off the shelf, or their cost.

How does the cost of newly packaged cartridges compare with the older version of packaging?
The Create A Friend cartridge is $31.99 +S&H at Cricutmachine.com and $49.99 +S&H at cricut.com at the time of this post. Again, I have not shopped for Create A Friend at a retail establishment in my town.

Please comment below on whether you have seen a significant price reduction in your most recent cartridge purchases as a direct result of the package reduction. This may be a case of "less is more" when it comes to what we are really going to end up paying for ProvoCraft's decision to cut costs on their end, but not on ours.

About Me - September 21, 2013

Oh where, oh where has Kim gone?! Well the answer would be that I have not gone anywhere, but the Wi-Fi router for our household of technology pretty much went kaput. It has been an issue for a couple weeks, but we had to pinpoint the issue starting with the Internet provider. Unfortunately, the cost was to us in the purchase of a new router.  Thanks to my son... we are back in "play".

In the meantime, I have been correcting school papers, reading leisure books, watching anime series/movies with my son and husband (I do like them, I have found) and fighting a sinus headache for several days. Thank goodness for the weekends and Wi-Fi routers! After a long week, my headache is gone and Internet is back. Now I need to create some paper crafting goodies.

But first, I have been enjoying one afternoon a week as a "Kim" time to just browse a store or two after work and have come across some fun items. (Wow, I did not have time to do anything while these photos loaded, before I had enough time to make dinner.  Oh how I love the new router!)

Ross Dress For Less finds: Holiday themed felt table runners, fake chains, 6"x6" scrapbook paper pack, boa and ghost salt and pepper shakers.

But wait, there is more: Strainer scoop, faux Halloween books, "Genie" lamp, mini baking dishes, parfait cups, pedicure set and nail clippers (only because the day I made this shopping trip a student broke a nail and I had NONE in my purse, what woman/mom/teacher/wife does not have nail clippers in their purse). The pedicure set was just cool looking with all the items it included for only $3.00.  This entire haul along with 5 very nice fall tops was only a little over $100!

The next stop was to Michael's to use a gift card  I had received. They have not been having any sales on items I particularly am interested in lately. So, it was not a great haul this time around. Stay tuned for another try at it on a "Kim" day.

Hope you are enjoying the transition into fall, which begins tomorrow September 22. My sinus headaches are my indicator it is coming. I must have some type of barometric pressure sensor.

What's On Your Workdesk Wednesday #224

I actually have a couple of projects in the works.  This is a good sign that I am getting settled into the school year.  It typically takes me the first 3-4 weeks to do so.  We were blessed with a nice donation for our high school classes, with the money we were upgraded to laptops and flat screens with doc-cams for our classrooms.  A mixed blessing as with all electronics comes the need to understand how to use each piece of equipment.  Haha.  You have heard me before claim how it can be a task in itself to research how-to work these devices.  But I have managed to get them all up and running and talking to each other.  Yeah!

Back to my workdesk at home for the WOYWW #224 hosted by Julia Dunnit of Stamping Ground each Wednesday.  A portal into the workdesks of avid artists around the world.

I have purchased some glitter nail polish to use on brads.  Back a few weeks ago, I came across a YouTube video on several ways to decorate office supply brads to make them look like the fancier embellished brads you pay a lot for at most craft stores.  You can also see my sketch pad.  I am working on the cards I will be teaching at my September 30 workshop.  The zip ties were for my wire cubbies, but I changed my mind on how I put them together.  Back in a drawer they will go, or actually they came from my son. The "people" are from the Create A Friend Cricut cartridge.  They just need to be dressed up.  That will come another day for another scrapbook layout post.

Enjoy!

What's On Your Workdesk? Wednesday 223

Hi everyone,

I missed you all last week both in visiting you and your visiting me.  It was the first day back to school last Wednesday for the students, then we were off on an overnight retreat Thursday and Friday.  So, needless to say, I was a little busy.  Things are beginning to slow down to the "norm" for what will be in store for this year, I think.

Tonight I had two very special paper crafting ladies over to create a scrapbook layout.  You can see the sample here.  My photo is not of my "normal" workdesk, but rather the island in my kitchen for me to work from this evening.  The best part of having workshops is the overall creativity of all who attend.  You can begin with an idea and see how it expands, changes, and transforms into each person's personality.  Thanks ladies for a grand evening!

The first part of the evening was me recording another how-to YouTube video for the stitching guide and foam mat you can see in the upper right hand corner.  I am having so much fun learning how to make YouTube videos after my fears in my earliest post to WOYWW.  I owe it all to the encouragement from the wonderful participants from the Stamping Ground sponsored weekly post hosted by Julia Dunnit.  Check it out and join in the fun.

Looking forward to visiting your workdesks and blogs.  Have a great rest of the week.  By the way, so far so good with art classes.  Again, thank you all for your encouraging comments.  You are a fabulous support group of one another's gifts, talents and work.  Thank you!

Magic Show - Create A Friend/Artbooking Layout

Abracadabra!

Continuing to make my way through the Cricut Artbooking overlays and Create A Friend characters. Today's layout was made using the magician (cut at 3 3/4") from page 81-82 of Create A Friend and the overlay from page 81 of Artbooking.  I wanted to use different photo mats, so I looked through the handbook of Artbooking and found the stars from page 65 would coordinate better with a magic theme (all cut using 11" no real dial). For embellishing I used glitter glue to give the layout a magical feel through the sparkle. I will also be adding wiggle eyes to the magician for added fun.

Artbooking Made Easy (S01E01): Getting Started with Cricut Artbooking

Western Cricut Create A Friend Scrapbook Layout

Cricut Artbooking/Create A Friend

I love cartridges with characters... Create A Friend is no exception. When put together with the ease of the overlays available on the Artbooking cartridge, you have got a nice layout.  I took my time and added embellishments to the cowboy, cowgirl and titles.  They are also "popped" off the page for more dimension.

Page overlays, photo mats and arrows are from the Artbooking cartridge page 79 "Buddies".  Cowboy, cowgirl, and titles are from the Create A Friend cartridge pages 77-80.

Visit my Close to My Heart Independent Consultant website to browse the quality products available for scrapbooking and rubber stamping paper crafts.  You can order anytime from anywhere in the USA and the order will come to you directly.  Be sure to check out my other posts for the September Stamp of the Month and National Stamping Month sets.  I also hold workshops every month to show you how to use our tools and techniques.
