Happy Thanksgiving

May you and yours have a blessed day full of reasons to be thankful. I am thankful for my family, my friends, my job, my home, food on our plates, craft room, vehicles, insurance, medicine... on and on. I have been blessed by wonderful blog followers and great people to paper craft along side me. Thank you all.

We get so busy in our day that we forget to stop and think about what all we are blessed with down to the smallest crumb or last penny. I pray you will take a breath and realize what you have in your life to be thankful for and give thanks to the Lord, for He is good.

I love you dad, you will be missed on this first Thanksgiving without you by our sides. May you be celebrating along with the Lord, and all our loved ones who are with you.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving celebrations!

The Best Time of the Year Fall 2013 Card

The 2013 home economics Thanksgiving card designed by my mom, Lydia Wilson, for my students. As a class, we had a great time with new to them techniques such as, distressing with both sanding and sponging. We also made an envelope to go with the card made out of wallpaper.

12-months of scrapbook layouts

My 12-months of scrapbook layouts challenge is now all together in one YouTube video. I just really like to be able to put them all in one place for viewing purposes rather than having to go through each and every post in the archives.  Enjoy!

Scrapbook Club comment on... Ask a Crafter #14 Kelly and Lindsay

Scrapbook Club

I am an avid watcher of The Frugal Crafter, Lindsay. She is wonderful at showing us how to use crafting tools and techniques. She is also who I go to for art how-to. She speaks at a level to which we can all feel confident about going and doing something on our own for the very first time. Lindsay is also very open to questions and has put together a weekly YouTube video in which she answers followers questions.

How does this relate to me posting on my blog... She mentioned my post from her Ask a Crafter #13. A follower wanted to know about stamp/scrap clubs. Lindsay opened the comments up to posting any we knew about, well, I just so happen to have one every month. So, in this week's video she mentioned my post much to my surprise. It literally took my breath away to hear The Frugal Crafter, Lindsay, say my name in her video. That is how much I look to her for advice and admire her expertise.

Please view her video, visit her channel and see all that she is willing to share. This post is about her, so if you have questions and want more information about my scrapbook club check out the side bar, e-mail me or leave a comment below.

Thank you Lindsay!

WOYWW #232, Thanksgiving Crafting

With Halloween over and Christmas on its way, Thanksgiving gets very little recognition until the day off and we all get to eat quite glutinously, watch some football and sleep.

I am doing my part to remember this holiday of celebration by pulling out all of my Thanksgiving themed stamps sets, Cricut cartridges containing pilgrims and turkeys, and embellishments. My plan, to create more themed pages and use my STUFF.

So take a look at this week's version of my desk...

The breakfast of champions, Quaker Real Medleys oatmeal and milk. Holiday catalogs full of sales and shopping enticements. But the best part, look at all the Cricut handbooks and cartridges that contain some form of Thanksgiving image! I was glad to see that I actually have more images than originally thought. I do not have a Thanksgiving specific cartridge :-( I have a variety of acrylic and wood stamp sets to choose from also. Now, let's talk about the pizza box to the far right... that contains my stickers. If you know me, you know I LOVE stickers and collect them just for the sake of having them to touch and shuffle through on occasion.

So here's to hoping I get some work done with these fun "toys" I have dug out from my stash. Have a look around the world at what is on other artsy, craftsy people's desks at WOYWW 232 from Stamping Ground's own Julia Dunnit

Thank you to all who have visited and shared a comment of two with me. I will be around this evening. Please check out my post on the flour babies of 2013. They are so cute. My students are doing their project very well.

Flour Babies 2013

Freshman Career - Life Skills

As the college/career teacher, I feel it is very important that our students be taught life skills; cooking, sewing, cleaning, etc. We, as a school, are not able to afford the fancy electronic babies to teach our students the importance of taking care of a baby and the additional work it is to care for one. Our version, creating 5-pound flour babies that any parent would love.

To make this project two-fold, the students learn to sew on a sewing machine the felt arms, legs and head. These are then hot glued to a duct tape covered bag of flour (this helps prevent the explosion of the flour on the school campus). For the face, wiggle eyes and a pacifier with the nipple cut off. Hot glued of course.

Another technique they are taught is how to wrap yarn around a dowel, dampen the yarn and bake to make curls. Did you know this?!

The assignment: carry the flour babies for 7 days, journal te experience by sharing the expressions/reactions of people they meet, contact me every two hours throughout the night by text, e-mail or call (my phone is on silent :-) If a baby is not brought to school a paper will be written on child abandonment. If the baby is in any way damaged, a paper is to be written on child abuse. If any of the check-in points are missed throughout the night, paragraphs are to be written on childhood illnesses. The best part, enjoy the experience with classmates by having all-nighters, going to the movies, etc.

The 2013 class has 16 students and their first outing is to our area science museum. Surprisingly they are looking forward to carrying the flour babies around with them.

Great project! Check out their work below. Stay tuned for a family portrait...

Pattern Pieces for arms, legs and head

Trace pattern pieces onto felt, teach how to be frugal. They call me "Frugal Fergie."

Dowels for neck and support for stuffed head.

Stuffed head.

Wrapping flour bag with duct tape.

All pieces stuffed and ready to be hot glued onto flour bag.

Head and limbs hot glued to flour bag.

Curled yarn for hair, wiggle eyes and pacifier to complete the "baby."

All ready to see the world, clothed even down to a diaper.

WOYWW #231 - Shape and Form

What's on the work desks in my classroom?

Amazing... my high school art students have once again awed me. The assignment was to create eight of the same image using different forms and shapes from the elements of design; light, heavy, curved, rough, organic, geometric, soft, and angular. Once they drew the different versions, they were then asked to sculpt two of the eight from clay. Before beginning to sculpt, they needed to break down the image for what shapes and colors were needed. Here is one of the student's work. Love, love my job.

So, now I ask... does the work desk from school and the work of my wonderful students qualify? Well, here it is anyway. Felt the need to brag on my students and their wonderful work. What do you superior work deskers think?

Geometric version of the pumpkin

Rough version next to the geometric

Buildings - form of soft

What brought me to sharing this great work of art, well it is Julia Dunnit's Stamping Ground blog and her challenge to share with the world what is on our work desk.  Head over, make some coffee or tea, sit back and enjoy the looksy around. I cannot express how helpful it has been to be a part of this as a very novice art teacher.

I look forward to your visit and comments. Keep checking back as there are 10 students to try and share with you this week.

About Me - November 5, 2013

Thanksgiving Decorating

I am taking advantage of that small block of time in between Halloween and Christmas to decorate for the month of November. The theme, thankfulness! Oh how fast we let the holiday season engulf us into busyness of the commercial world of gift buying. Please stop, take in a deep breath and enjoy the scents of cinnamon, apples and pumpkin. Share your reasons for being thankful throughout this month with friends, family, co-workers and anyone else you may meet along the way.

My thanks to you all for your support throughout the year and the encouragement your comments and visits leave with me each and every day. I do not see you day-to-day in person, but I know you are there. You are always in my thoughts and you are my purpose for keeping this blog active.

Happy month of Thanksgiving!
