About Me - July 25, 2014, Oregon Coast, Scrapbooking and Flip Flaps

Vacation

Yes! My yearly trip to the Oregon Coast with my mom has come and gone. However, I have much to show for the time spent away. Much has been scrapbooked that is... Here is some show and tell.

The view from our cabin deck of the Oregon Coast.

Here are my pages from the beginning of the week.

Here are the pages after four days of straight scrapbooking.

This scrapbook project consisted of two trips to Washington D.C./Philadelphia/New York with the school where I teach. It is an intense six days of non-stop touring of these areas. Now we can actually sit back and relive the experiences with the pages finally completed.

I went back to the basics where I did not do a lot of embellishing on my pages. I did not even do any journaling at this point. I made sure to take photos of signs which said where we had been. I also made great use of the Close To My Heart Flip Flaps. I LOVE them! I can not say enough about how they made my scrapbooking so much easier and I used less pages by being able to stack my photos.

Here are samples:

The Flip Flap is adhered to the page protector allowing for multiple photos to be placed on a single page. I have used them quite extensively throughout this album in varying sizes and ways. The next photos show a larger Flip Flap and how I used the World War II Memorial sign for my journaling of where we were.

Be sure to check out the Flip Flaps from Close To My Heart on my Independent Consultant website at www.kimferguson.ctmh.com. You will be glad you added them to your basic scrapbooking supplies.

Enjoy!

About Me - July 15, 2014, Photo/Memorabilia Storage Organization

How I Organize My Photos and Memorabilia

I follow a great crafter, The Frugal Crafter, who is currently doing a scrapbooking series. She is basically rallying us all together to get back to scrapbooking. Be sure to check out her blog and YouTube Channel. You will not be sorry!

As a 20+ years scrapbooker, I have been feeling quite overwhelmed and behind in my scrapbooking. I had the best of intentions to have my two sons scrapbooks completed through high school by their high school graduations. Well, they both just had college graduations (one bachelor's degree and the other associate's degree) and the albums are behind back to 2005. What happened? I went back to school, we moved, I began teaching full time, etc. So the overall answer... LIFE. We all know this to be a fact. The best of plans seem to be based on being flexible and moving some things to the back burner. In my case, scrapbooks have been neglected and are burning up on the back burner.

I encourage us all to join in with The Frugal Crafter and pull out those photos and memorabilia once again and get to work. Get those photos off of your digital devices and into a source where they can be enjoyed by all. I distinctly remember teaching for many years to this same fact, however the phrase was to get the film out of their canisters and developed. So basically things have not changed, it is just a different format in which we are storing away those lovely memories and not sharing with our family and friends.

Here are my first steps after having my photos printed, which by the way, I am current in my printing. I begin with photo storage boxes and dividers. Be sure to label at least the first photo in a batch with the who, what, where and sometimes how. I prefer the chronological method, but some like to organize by themes (ie. birthdays, holidays). I also organize my memorabilia which will not fit into the photo storage boxes. I do this by sorting into date order in some sort of larger container, then I place the sorted memorabilia into plastic folders.

Once the organization is in place, it is easy to grab your photos and the coordinating memorabilia to start working on your layouts. The end result is a lovely shelf of completed scrapbooks. Another tip is to be sure to back up your photos on DVD's or other means by way of an external hard drive or the Internet. We used to keep our negatives, my advise then was to swap negatives with a family member or friend in case of a catastrophe in which the scrapbooks were damaged, at least the negatives were still around for reproducing the photos.

Hope this has helped get you re-energized to get back to scrapbooking those great photos you have so diligently been taking.

Enjoy!

About Me - July 6, 2014, Empty Nest

It has been a long time since I have just made a blog post "About Me". I am not sure if that is a good or bad thing in your opinion. There hasn't been any really exciting things to write about until now and that is our empty nest. Yes, our youngest son has moved out to prepare for college in the fall. Wow! the time has gone by fast and my head is spinning.

Once we drove away from our son's apartment, I recalled a feeling I had about 16 years ago when we had dropped him off at his K-4 classroom. "Now what do I do?" My "what do I want to do when I grow up" was always answered with "be a mom". I love being a mom and am so grateful for the Lord blessing us with two wonderful boys to raise. However, now they are to move on to become the men they are to be and that first big step is to fly out of the nest. This does not mean I stop being a mom, my role has just significantly changed in their lives.

So what will I do? Well, I am about 10 years behind in my chronological scrapbooking, fabric seems to be multiplying under my bed, and the exercise equipment needs to be dusted off and put to use. Oh yes, and there is my teaching career which always needs some fine tuning each year as my schedule changes, and I am in my final months of my 4-year term as a City Councilor. If I look to all of these things, I have plenty to do to keep my mind occupied. But, I will still be thinking of the boys and looking forward to opportunities we have to be together. It is just strange that they will be more like guests than occupants when they come home. After all, their bedrooms have become my craft and sewing rooms.

To all you moms, we must suck it up in front of our grown children. But, I will turn around and cry for the joy they have brought to me, and the pride I have for who they are, and be anxious for who they are still yet to become.

Josh and James, I love you!  Mom

Sons are the greatest joy and the most beautiful blessings!
